Maybe it’s all the Cake Boss I’ve been watching lately, but I was quite excited when my colleague suggested that we stop at Ladyfingers Bakery on our way back from a work outing yesterday. This hole in the wall bakery on Santa Clara has always made me curious. It has such a cute name! To be honest, how many old school bakeries do you really see around these days? And that’s exactly what this place is. It is small and a little outdated, but cute and full of homeyness.

They have freshly baked goodies in the 3 pastry cases and have a pretty decent variety. No straight-up donuts, but bear claws and danishes are definitely available, leaving their focus mostly on cakes and old fashioned pastries. Their most popular cake (which also comes in cupcake size) is the black bottom cake, with chocolate cake on the bottom and cream cheese on top. It looked incredible…and I may be kicking myself a little for not trying one. I, however, opted for the mini-cheesecake and was not disappointed. All of their deserts come in mini size which was probably my favorite part of their selection. Sometimes you just want a small something sweet but don’t really need a large cupcake to fulfill that desire.

If you are looking for an elegant, cutesy, cupcake shop, this is not the bakery to head to. But, if you just want a little cake in your life and maybe some Oakland charm too, head over to Ladyfingers. It will make you smile.
